Local Laws and Customs in Saudi Arabia

Respect Local Laws

Saudi Arabia follows Islamic law (Sharia). Visitors are expected to respect local customs, traditions, and religious practices.

Dress Code

Modest dress is required in public areas. Men should avoid wearing shorts above the knee. Women should wear loose-fitting, modest clothing that covers the body. Abaya is recommended for women in public areas.

Photography

Avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and local people without permission. Always ask before taking photos of individuals.

Prohibited Items

  • Alcohol is strictly prohibited
  • Pork products are not allowed
  • Non-Islamic religious materials should not be displayed publicly
  • Drugs are strictly prohibited

Ramadan Considerations

During Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is not permitted for everyone, including non-Muslims.

Currency and Tipping

The local currency is Saudi Riyal (SAR). Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A 10-15% tip at restaurants is customary.
